LA PA GO | The Hubula tribe is also known as the "Dani " tribe. They are a tribal group that live in the Baliem Valley in the Central Mountains of Papua. Their settlements are located between Bukit Ersberg and Grasberg in Kabupaten Jayawijaya and parts of Kabupaten Puncak Jaya.
The hubula tribe is one of the most populated tribes in Papua. They were one of the first tribes to be discovered in Papua, when Richard Archbold spotted them from the air in 1938. Today, the Hubula people still live a traditional way of life (especially the way of gardening & house style) and pig racing, with many living in fortified settlements called hamlets.
Here are some aspects of the hubula tribe's culture:
Clothing
Men traditionally wear a koteka, a hollowed-out gourd, while women wear a skirt made of woven bark. Wealthier women may wear a skirt made of orchid fiber.
Jewelry
Both men and women wear jewelry made from shells, bones, seeds, and colorful bird feathers.
Nose piercing
Men are known for piercing their nose with the tusks of a wild boar.
Noken
A handcrafted bag woven by hubula women from orchid fiber. It symbolizes the women's artistic prowess and their role in the community.
